I am one very happy person right now. I can confirm that this new graphics card upgrade is working in a MacPro1,1 - that is, the original Mac Pro with PCIe 1.0. The graphics card is PCIe 2.0 but it is most definitely downward compatible with 1.0. Apple doesn't tell you this so you upgrade to a new Mac Pro because you think you cannot upgrade the video card anymore on this older Mac Pro.
After installing it I turned on my Mac Pro and she automatically recognized the card upon startup. You have to be running Mac OS X 10.5.7 or greater - I am running 10.6.1. Note: There are two power cables and I found the other power connector on the motherboard right beside the one that was leading to the X1900 XT card. Warning: It is a tight fight if you have somewhat large hands like I do. This video card is quiet compared to my ATI Radeon X1900 XT w/512 MB RAM.
You hear it spin up when booting the Mac Pro but after that it is very quiet. Here is the information from System Profiler. ATI Radeon HD 4870: Chipset Model: ATI Radeon HD 4870 Type: GPU Bus: PCIe Slot: Slot-1 PCIe Lane Width: x16 VRAM (Total): 512 MB Vendor: ATI (0x1002) Device ID: 0x9440 Revision ID: 0x0000 ROM Revision: 113-B7710C-176 EFI Driver Version: 01.00.318 My system is once again quiet - the way I like it. Click to expand.Thanks. The 4870 card gives my MacPro1,1 a whole new life, and what a change from the X1900 XT card.
It seems like everything is running more smoothly graphically in Snow Leopard. I hear it spin up upon boot up and then after a few seconds it quiets down. I can hear it but it is not annoying like the previous card was. Now I am able to listen to music or watch TV on my Mac Pro without being distracted. While I was inside my Mac Pro I found the two SATA connectors behind the fan assembly.
Sometime in the near future I am going to get that two port eSATA expander from OWC and add that. Click to expand. I didn't see anything in a search so I posted it - hope it helps those people that have the MacPro1,1.
After 24 hours this card is working like a charm and it is now enjoyable to listen to music on my Mac Pro without having my own personal wind tunnel start up. LOL The ambient temperature in the Mac Pro is now no more than 74 degrees. Also, I replaced two 1 TB Samsung HDs with two 2 TB WD GreenPower HDs. What a difference in temperatures too! I am tempted to take the heatsinks off of the Xeons and lap the copper on them and also clean the processors and put Arctic Silver on them.
That would help tremendously I think - it could lower the ambient temperature up to 10 degrees more. I never thought that PCIe 2.0 was downward compatible with PCIe 1.0. It never occurred to me.
Never too old to learn something IMHO!
I just got my ATI Radeon 4870 a few days ago for my Mac Pro '06. It works great. I am running 2 24' Dell monitors, one through DVI and one through a the minidisplay port with the mini to DVI converter I bought at Apple, and they run flawlessly. I run World of Warcraft at full setting without a hitch. I also play a lot of games on my Windows 7 install, dual monitor, and everything works FLAWLESSLY.
I play Crysis at max resolution with some high settings (no AA though), and it plays great too. There's not much else I can say other than the card works fantastically on my Mac Pro '06. Don't hesitate, just get it 😀.
Yes, the X1900 was put in the bag and box the 4870 came in and now sits in my closet. I'll keep it around in case I ever sell my Mac Pro for a newer Mac Pro so I can keep my 4870:P But, yes, even a few days later, my card works great. Absolutely nothing goes wrong. And I also can't hear a difference in idle fan sounds and think the 4870 is quieter while gaming. The X1900 would rev up its fans when I played World of Warcraft, my 4870 sounds like it's still idle after playing for hours at max settings.
I don't know if it's because it can handle more and hence WoW isn't taxing, but I've yet to hear the fans rev up. Same with using it on Windows 7, the card stays relatively silent. I think it's a smart purchase if you have the extra money. Yes it's an pc XFX 4890 (regular stock clocked model; not XXX version).
I have it working in osx via injectors. I've been trying to flash it recently, as a rom has become available, however things aren't going very well. П˜Ÿ It seems possible that my later version xfx 4890 is not very compatible with the rom. Seems like people with earlier versions, had better success. If I can't get it to flash correctly, might just change to a more compatible brand.
This thread can help answer all your questions: Word to the wise though, if you're not comfortable fiddling around with stuff inside your comp, it might not be a good idea. It can cause a lot of headaches. I've been reading the threads for days trying to figure out if I should get one for my 1st gen Mac Pro. The only folks that are having problems are the ones using non-Apple-branded displays. Some 3rd party displays seem to not like this card, though I'm not smart enough to explain to you why. What kind of display are you using?
Do you have another one you could borrow or use to try that? Again, after reading all the threads, everyone seems really pleased with the card, and the only folks reporting problems are reporting problems with some 3rd party displays. I have my own question out there asking what displays WILL work with the card, but haven't gotten too many responses. Let us know what kind of display you're using. Apple Footer.
